You can run proctored assessments with your Blended Teaching content in any LMS — the right setup depends on which LMS your course uses. This guide gives you the full picture in one place.
It covers:
Proctoring Support at a Glance
Proctoring in Canvas
Proctoring in Blackboard with Honorlock
Moodle, D2L Brightspace, and Other Proctoring Tools
In-Person Options That Work in Any LMS
Choosing the Right Option
1. Proctoring Support at a Glance
Canvas (with the Blended Teaching integration): proctor Blended Teaching quizzes directly with Respondus LockDown Browser or Honorlock, enabled per quiz in its Settings.
Blackboard: proctor your Blended Teaching quiz with Honorlock, using Honorlock's third-party exam feature.
Moodle, D2L Brightspace, or another proctoring tool: export your questions and run the quiz natively in your LMS, with your proctoring tool applied.
Any LMS, in person: paper exams and password-protected supervised sessions work everywhere.
2. Proctoring in Canvas
In Canvas courses using the Blended Teaching integration, you can proctor your quizzes directly with two services:
Respondus LockDown Browser. For setup instructions, click here.
Honorlock. For setup instructions, click here.
Both are enabled per quiz:
Open the quiz's Settings tab.
Scroll to the Proctoring section.
Select your proctoring service and save.
💡 Proctoring sections merged into one Canvas shell on different due dates?
When multiple sections are merged into a single Canvas course shell and need different due dates for the same assessment, only one due date syncs per assessment and proctoring keys off the end date — so coordinating both inside Blended Teaching gets complex. (Sections that each have their own separate Canvas shell aren't affected.) If that's your situation, it's often simpler to export your questions and run the quiz natively in Canvas, where per-section dates and proctoring live side by side.
3. Proctoring in Blackboard with Honorlock
If your course runs in Blackboard, Honorlock can proctor your Blended Teaching quiz using its third-party exam feature — Honorlock supervises the quiz wherever it lives, so this doesn't depend on a direct integration.
The approach:
In Blended Teaching, set a proctoring password on your quiz (Settings → Proctoring). This password is what gates entry to the quiz.
In Honorlock, register a third-party exam that matches your quiz's name and dates, and provide the quiz link and password.
Students launch the quiz through Honorlock, which enters the password and supervises the attempt.
For the full walkthrough, see A Guide to Using Honorlock with Blended Teaching Quizzes.
Setting this up for the first time? Honorlock with Blackboard is a newer configuration for Blended Teaching courses. Reach out to our support team as you set it up the first time — we'll make sure it's configured correctly for your students.
4. Moodle, D2L Brightspace, and Other Proctoring Tools
For Moodle and D2L Brightspace courses — or any course using a proctoring tool other than Respondus or Honorlock — run the assessment natively in your LMS, where that LMS's proctoring tools can supervise it:
Export the quiz (or its question bank) from Blended Teaching. For the full guide, click here.
Import the file into your LMS and build the quiz there.
Apply your LMS proctoring tool to that quiz, exactly as you would to any native assessment.
Bonus for Moodle and D2L courses: a natively run quiz also puts scores straight into your LMS gradebook.
5. In-Person Options That Work in Any LMS
5.1. Paper exams
Blended Teaching can create, print, scan, and auto-grade paper exams — a great fit for in-person, supervised testing in any course.
To learn how to create paper exams, click here.
5.2. Proctoring password
Add a proctoring password in a quiz's Settings → Proctoring section. Students can only begin the quiz once the password is entered, which works well for testing centers and instructor-supervised sessions, whatever LMS your course uses.
6. Choosing the Right Option
Integrated Canvas course → enable Respondus LockDown Browser or Honorlock on the quiz.
Blackboard course → proctor with Honorlock's third-party exam feature (loop in our support team the first time).
Moodle or D2L course, or another proctoring tool → export your questions and run the quiz natively in the LMS.
In-person exam in any LMS → paper exams, or a proctoring password with supervision.
