A Guide to Using Honorlock with Blended Teaching Quizzes

How to use Honorlock with your Blended Teaching quizzes.

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Blended Teaching allows you to use your university's proctoring tools to oversee your quizzes in Blended Teaching. This guide shows you how to set that up for Honorlock. There is a separate guide for Respondus here.

Important: Honorlock settings must be configured in your LMS at least 48 hours before the quiz start date and time.

Part 1: Configure Your Quiz in the Blended Teaching Control Center

First, you need to enable proctoring for the specific quiz within the Blended Teaching platform.

  1. Navigate to your quiz: Log in to the Blended Teaching Control Center at https://educators.blended-teaching.com. Choose your course, and navigate to the quiz you wish to proctor.

  2. Open Quiz Settings: Select the "Settings" tab for that quiz.

  3. Enable Proctoring:

    • Scroll down to the "Proctoring" section.

    • Click the checkbox to enable proctoring.

    • Select Honorlock from the service options.

    • The system will automatically generate a unique, secure Password. You will need this password for Part 2.

    • Click Save to apply the changes.

Part 2: Set up Honorlock in Your LMS (Canvas or Blackboard)

After enabling proctoring in the Control Center, you must create a corresponding third-party exam in your LMS. The steps below use the general Honorlock interface, which is very similar in both Canvas and Blackboard.

1. Register a Third-Party Exam

  • In your LMS course, navigate to the Honorlock tool.

  • Click the "Register Third Party Exam" button. (This may also be found under the blue ellipses "..." menu).

2. Enter Exam Settings

You will now see a form to enter the quiz details. It is critical that this information matches what is in the Blended Teaching Control Center.

  • Exam Name: Use the exact same name as your quiz in Blended Teaching.

  • Exam Start & End: Enter the same open and close dates and times that you set for the quiz.

  • Exam Password: Enter the unique password that was generated in the Blended Teaching Control Center (from Part 1, Step 3).

  • Exam Platform: Type Blended Teaching in this field.

  • Exam URL/Link: You have two options for this field:

Option 1: Direct Assignment Link (Recommended): In your LMS, find the assignment link for the Blended Teaching quiz. Right-click on the link, select "Copy link address," and paste it into this field. This provides the most direct path for students.

Important: Always make sure that the Assignment is marked as “Load this tool in a new tab”

Option 2: Student Portal Link: If you do not integrate direct assignment links in your LMS, you can use the general student portal link: https://library.blended-teaching.com

3. Select Proctoring Settings

Choose the security settings you require for the exam. Select a box to enable the setting. A blue checkmark will appear.

  • Record Webcam, Record Screen, Record Web Traffic: These are standard recording options.

  • Student Photo, Student ID, Room Scan: These are pre-exam verification steps.

  • Browser Guard: This locks down the student's browser to prevent navigating to other sites.

  • Whitelist URLs: Use this if you want students to access a specific website during the exam. Be as specific as possible with the URL and remember to provide the link to students in the quiz instructions.

4. Select Student Guidelines

Define what students are allowed to do or use during the exam (e.g., Scratch Paper, Notes Allowed, Restroom Breaks). These guidelines will be shown to students before they begin.

  • Additional Instructions: Use this field to provide specific instructions. We highly recommend you use this space to explain how students should access their quiz (e.g., "Click the quiz link on the previous page to begin your attempt after starting the proctoring session.").

5. Enter Accommodations (Optional)

If specific students require special accommodations (such as extra time), use this section. These notes are only visible to the Honorlock proctors.

  • Include the student's name and the specific accommodation details.

6. Set Exam Visibility

To ensure students cannot see the exam in Honorlock outside of the availability window, select "No, use the dates on the exam to determine student view." This respects the Start and End dates you entered earlier.

7. Save Your Setup

Click Save to finish creating the Honorlock-proctored assessment. Your quiz is now configured with Honorlock. If you have any questions, please contact our support team.

Troubleshooting

I don't see Honorlock on one of my Exams:

If you do not see Honorlock on one of your exams, there are a couple of potential reasons, including:

  1. The quiz information does not match

  2. You have exhausted all "attempts"

1. The quiz information does not match

Honorlock requires that all quiz/exam information match exactly with the information in Blended Teaching. Refer to step 2, "Enter Exam Settings" in here to ensure all information matches.

2. You have exhausted all "attempts"

Honorlock may be correctly enabled for an assessment, but you might not be prompted to enter the Honorlock password when previewing if you have already exhausted all allowed attempts.

Before starting any proctored exam or quiz attempt, Honorlock requires students to enter a password. This password must be entered for every attempt.

Once all allowed attempts have been used, the password is no longer required, and students can enter the assessment solely to review their results once they are released.

Results will still remain hidden until the release date and time you set in Blended Teaching.

  • To learn more about the Results Display settings, click here.

This feature ensures students do not need to locate or remember the password to review their results after release.

Note for Instructors: The same rules apply when previewing an exam as an Instructor. Opening and starting an exam as an Instructor counts as an attempt. Once you have exhausted all allowed attempts, you will no longer be prompted for the Honorlock password. This only affects your account. Students will still be required to enter the Honorlock password as long as they have remaining attempts.
