Canvas Support: Guide to Quizzes

This guide shows you how to build and manage Quizzes in Canvas.

This guide answers common questions about Blended Teaching quizzes for instructors teaching in Canvas. We'll add more over time, so if something is missing, ask us and we'll add it.

Setting the number of quiz attempts

Where you set attempts depends on where the quiz lives:

  • For a Blended quiz your students reach through Canvas, which has a matching Canvas assignment: set attempts on the quiz's Setup tab in your Control Center.

  • For a quiz built in Canvas: set attempts on the quiz in Canvas.

A quiz in your Control Center

  1. Select Assessments in the left sidebar of your Control Center.

  2. Find the quiz, click the three-dot menu on its row and select Setup.

  3. In the list of sections on the left of the page, under Rules, click Attempts. This card controls retakes, waiting periods and which score counts.

  4. Tick the box to allow multiple attempts and set how many, then click Save setup at the bottom of the page.

On the quiz Setup tab, Attempts is chosen under Rules and the box to allow multiple attempts is highlighted.

An interactive practice quiz always has unlimited attempts. To give one student an extra attempt without changing the quiz for everyone, add an accommodation on the Students page; see Making Accommodations: Extra Time, Attempts & Extensions.

A quiz built in Canvas

  1. In your Canvas course, go to Quizzes in the course navigation on the left.

  2. Click the name of the quiz you want to change.

  3. Click Edit at the top right of the page.

  4. Scroll down until you find the tick box for Allow Multiple Attempts.
