If you are hosting quizes or assignments in Blended Teaching and your class is integrated with us, you will be able to sync the grades from your Blended Teaching Gradebook to your Canvas or Blackboard gradebook. This step-by-step guide shows you how.
When we use the term assessment in this guide, we are meaning any form of graded quiz, exam, assignment, etc.
1. Introduction to Grade Syncing
Grade Syncing refers to the process by which the Blended Teaching system pushes grades stored in the Blended Teaching Gradebook into your LMS gradebook into the corresponding quizzes and assignments for the relevant students.
There is no manual work for you to do in copying across the grades, except for maybe pushing a button.
By using the Grade Syncing feature you remove any manual work of copying and pasting data, and the incumbent human error than ensues.
2. How To Sync Grades
If you have grade syncing set up, there are two approaches to gradesyncing - Manual, or Automatic.
Manually
In the Gradebook page of your Control Center, you will see a "Sync Grades with Canvas/Blackboard" button. When you manually press that button, it will ask you which assessment you want to sync grades for. Select the one you want and go for it.
When you press this button, it will sync the grades for that one assessment with your gradebook. It works a bit like a white board. When you press sycn, your LMS will first clear out any grades stored in that assessment and start from a blank slate. It will then write then new grades into the relevant student's fields. If a student has no grade in Blended Teaching, it will leave that field blank for that student in your LMS.
When you sync grades, it removes the grades for that assessment in your LMS and replaces them. If you have made any adjustments to grades in your LMS, and then you sync with Blended Teaching, those adjustments will be overwritten. So you will want to make those adjustments in Blended Teaching instead.
Automatically [COMING SOON]
When building an assessment in Blended Teaching, in the Quiz tab, you are able to set the assessment to automatically sync with Canvas.
There are 2 forms of automatic sync:
Sync Once: This setting triggers the Blended Teaching Gradebook to sync once on a specified date (e.g. the due date of the assessment). If you want to sync again after that date, you can do it manually (see above).
Live Sync: This creates a continued feed of grades being pushed by Blended Teaching into your LMS triggered each time a student submits an assessment that results in an updated grade in the Blended Teaching Gradebook. Your LMS gradebook will match your Blended Teaching Gradebook.
Keep in mind that if you use Live Sync, depending on your LMS Gradebook settings, students may immediately be able to see their grades. Make sure to check those settings before enabling Live Sync.
3. FAQ
If I sync grades now, would they immediately be displayed in Canvas for those that have taken the quiz?
They will immediately be pushed into your Canvas gradebook, but whether your students can see them will depend on your settings in your LMS.
What happens if I manually sync multiple times?
Each time you sync grades, your LMS will remove all grades for that assessment that currently exist (like rubbing out everything on a white board) and write in their place the grades pushed from Blended Teaching for that assessment.
What happens if it automatically syncs, and then I manually sync after?
If you automatically use Sync Once, you can then manually sync after that as many times as you want. Please see the note above about manual syncing to learn more about how it works.
Should I wait and sync only once after everyone has completed the exam?
You can sync as many times as you want. Just make sure you're happy with your LMS gradebook visibility settings to ensure students can or can't see grades appearing there, as you intend.
