How to Manage Student Quiz & Assignment Grades

Once students have taken a quiz or assignment, here's how to view and manage submissions, add time, add attempts and adjust scores.

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Our goal is to save you time and help you maximize your impact. Quizzing and Assignments are core part of that. This guide shows you how to manage the submissions of students.

For future reference, we use the blanket term "assessments" to refer to any form of assignment, quiz or exam.

1. Review Grades

When a student submits their answers for a graded assessment, their results will appear in the Gradebook almost immediately.

Note that only graded assessments show up here. If they have completed an ungraded assessment (like a practice quiz), the results aren't available for instructors to see anywhere.

2. Sync Grades with Canvas or Blackboard

Integrated Classes

If your class is integrated and you want to sync the grades in Canvas or Blackboard, you can either set it up to happen automatically (on specified dates, or all the time), or manually click the sync button in the Gradebook. This will sync all of the grades for all assessments with your Canvas or Blackboard Gradebook without you having to do extra manual work.

Be careful as this will overwrite any historic grades you have already synced to your LMS. If you made any adjustments to grades after adding them in your LMS, you may lose those.

Unintegrated Classes

If your class is unintegrated, you will need to manually copy your grades into Canvas. To make this easy, you can download the list of students and grades in the gradebook, sorted in alphabetical order by last name, just like in Canvas and Blackboard.

Detailed instructions on how to sync grades can be found here:

3. View Individual Answers

There are two routes you can take to see the individual answers students made for each assessment submission, via the Gradebook, or via the Quizzes tab.

Via the Gradebook

To see the individual answers from a student via the Gradebook, head to the Gradebook tab.

To see individual answers:

  1. Go to the Gradebook tab in the Control Center.

  2. Find the relevant student in the table of students.

  3. Click on their name. This will take you through to the Student Submissions page, which provides you access to all of the assessment submissions made by the student.

  4. Click on the blue "View Responses" button on the relevant assessment to go to the individual assessment submission page for that student, displaying their answers, and other interesting data about their attempt.

Via the Quizzes Tab

To see the individual answers from a student via the Quizzes tab, head to the Moderate page in the Quizzes tab.

To see individual answers:

  1. Go to the Quizzes tab in the Control Center.

  2. Find the relevant quiz or assignment from the list.

  3. Click on the 3 dots on the far right hand side. A drop down will appear. Select "Moderate".

  4. On the Moderate page, click the "View Responses" link on the right hand side next the relevant student.

  5. This will take you to the page for that assessment and student, displaying their answers, and other interesting data about their attempt.

4. Add Attempts

If a student needs an additional attempt at an assessment, you can add one in the Moderate section of the relevant assessment.

To add an attempt:

  1. Go to the Quizzes tab in the Control Center.

  2. Find the relevant quiz or assignment from the list.

  3. Click on the 3 dots on the far right hand side. A drop down will appear. Select "Moderate".

  4. On the Moderate page, find the relevant student and press the pencil button on the right hand side.

  5. Add more attempts into the "Additional Attempts" field.

5. Give Extra Time

If you want to provide extra time for a specific student on a timed assessment, you can easily do so in the Moderation section of the relevant assessment.

To add extra time for a student:

  1. Go to the Quizzes tab in the Control Center.

  2. Find the relevant assessment from the list.

  3. Click on the 3 dots on the far right hand side. A drop down will appear. Select "Moderate".

  4. On the Moderate page, find the relevant student and press the pencil button on the right hand side.

  5. Add more time in the Hours and Minutes fields.

6. Manually Adjust A Grade

Sometimes you need to adjust a grade for a student. Perhaps a question was not clear, or perhaps they just gave you some money - we don't judge πŸ˜‰. On the Gradebook page you can manually overwrite a student's grade.

To adjust a grade for a student:

  1. Go to the Gradebook tab in the Control Center.

  2. Find the relevant grade from the table of students and assessments.

  3. Double click on the grade you want to change.

  4. Enter the number you want it to be and hit enter.

  5. When you hover over the adjusted grade, it will pop up with the original score, who adjusted it and when.
