Some universities have rules about staff earning from their own colleagues or students. If yours does, or you would simply rather not, you can leave out earnings from your own university. There are two tick boxes: one for referral fees on your Referrals page and one for royalties on your Royalties page. Each works on its own.
Why you might use it
Your university's conflict-of-interest rules ask you not to earn from colleagues or students at your own university.
You assign a textbook your materials helped build, and you want to tell your students plainly that you earn nothing from them.
You introduce colleagues at your own university and would rather not earn from them.
Leave out referral fees from your colleagues
Sign in to Blended Teaching and open your Referrals page. The box is under the summary at the top.
Tick Exclude referral fees from instructors at my university.
It saves the moment you tick it, and the line beneath shows the day it took effect. From that day, colleagues at your university earn you no referral fee. Colleagues at every other university earn you referral fees as usual. The 12 months for each colleague keep running while the box is ticked.
Leave out royalties from your students
Sign in to Blended Teaching and open your Royalties page. The box is under the summary at the top.
Tick Exclude royalties from students at my university.
It saves the moment you tick it, and the line beneath shows the day it took effect. From that day, students at your university earn you no royalties. Students at every other university earn you royalties as usual.
Where each box starts
Royalties starts from your agreement with us. If your agreement already leaves out students at your own university, the box is ticked when you first look and marked Set by your agreement. You can change it yourself.
Referral fees starts unticked.
If your agreement leaves out every payment, both boxes are ticked and cannot be changed on the page. They read Set by your agreement. Contact us to change it.
What changes, and what stays
A change applies from the day you make it. It never reaches back: anything you earned before is still yours, and is paid as usual in September or February.
Months already calculated never change.
Your university is the one on your profile on the day of each sale. If you change the university on your profile, the new one counts from that day.
Your students pay the same price whichever way the box is set.
Your royalty rate and your other earnings stay the same.
Money left out stays with Blended. It is not passed to anyone else.
Seeing what was left out
Your referral statement and your royalty statement each end with a line, Left out at your request, showing the amount left out. It sits outside the totals, so what you are owed is never mixed up with what you chose not to take.
Telling your students or your university
While the royalties box is ticked, you can say plainly that you earn nothing from your own students. Wording you can paste into a syllabus:
"I contributed teaching materials that were used to build this textbook. I receive no royalty from any student at this university."
If your university has a conflict-of-interest process, this is usually what it wants to see. We are happy to confirm your arrangement and the student price in writing. Ask us from the help center.
Changing your mind
Untick the box. From that day on, you earn from your own university again. Days when the box was ticked stay left out, and colleagues you introduced are still your introductions: their sales count again for whatever is left of their 12 months.
You can tick and untick it as often as you like.
