FAQ
1. Introduction
If you teach multiple sections of the same course, managing students individually can become cumbersome. Without sections, it’s harder to:
View progress for one section at a time
Assign different due dates to different groups (unintegrated courses only)
Keep your gradebook organized
To solve this, Blended Teaching includes a built-in Sections feature that lets you group students and apply filters or assignment rules by section.
⚠️ Note: If your course is integrated and you need to set different dates for different sections, we do not recommend creating sections in Blended Teaching. To manage different dates in integrated courses see our guide here.
2. Create Sections
2.1 Open Manage Sections
Go to your Blended Teaching Control Center.
Navigate to the Students tab.
Select Manage Sections.
2.2 Add Sections
Click Add Section.
Enter a section name (for example, course code or section number).
Click Create.
Repeat these steps for each section you want to add.
3. Assign Students to Sections
When starting out with sections, all students are listed as Unassigned. Follow the steps below to assign students to a section.
3.1 Assign students
Select the checkbox next to one or more student names.
Click Assign to Section.
Choose the section to assign them.
Students immediately move into the chosen section.
3.2 Move or remove students
To change a student’s section:
Select the student.
Use Assign to Section to move them to a different section, or
Select Remove from section to return them to Unassigned.
Section assignments are not permanent. If you accidentally add a student to the incorrect section. Click the check box next to their name and assign them to either the correct section, or select Remove from section to return them to Unassigned.
4. Use Sections Across Blended Teaching
After creating sections, you can filter by section in key areas.
4.1 Student Progress
In Student Progress, use the section filter to view progress for a single section, switch between sections, or view unassigned students.
4.2 Gradebook
In the Gradebook, the section filter allows you to focus on one section at a time and review grades for that group.
5. Assign Quizzes or Assignments by Section (Unintegrated only)
⚠️ Note: We do not recommend assigning assessments by section if your textbook is integrated. LMSs including Canvas and Blackboard do not allow multiple due dates to be synced for different sections, only the top dates will sync, which may result in confusion for students.
If your course is integrated and you need to set different dates for different sections, see our guide here.
Sections let you customize availability and due dates for assignments or quizzes. Only students in the sections you assign will be able to take the assessment. Students who are not assigned to the quiz or assignment won’t be able to access it at all.
5.1 Assign to specific sections
When creating or editing a quiz or assignment:
Open the quiz or assignment settings.
Locate the Assign To section.
Select one or more sections.
Only these sections will have access to the assessment.
Click Save.
Important: If you omit a section when assigning, students in that section will be not be able to take the quiz or assignment.
5.1 Set different due dates per section
You can assign the same quiz or assignment to multiple sections and set different due dates for each one.
To add additional sets of dates for different sections:
Click + Assign To
Add the relevant sections or select Everyone Else to assign to remaining students, including any that are not in an assigned section (e.g. Section 1)
Set the dates
Click Save
Omitted sections remain excluded from the assessment.
6. FAQ
6.1 Do students have to be assigned to a section?
No. Students can remain unassigned, and you can assign or move them at any time.
6.2 Can I change sections mid‑term?
Yes. You can reassign students to different sections whenever needed.
6.3 Do sections affect existing grades?
No. Sections only affect organization, filtering, and assignment availability, not stored grades.
6.4 Do section settings apply to all assignment/quiz controls?
Only due dates can be customized per section. Other settings, such as publishing/unpublishing an assignment or quiz, the point value, or results configurations, apply to all students regardless of their section.
For example, if you unpublish a quiz, it will be unpublished for every student, no matter what sections they’re in.
6.5 What if I set a due date for one section and don't assign it to any other sections?
Assignments and quizzes are only available to the sections you assign. If a section is not assigned (or you omit it when setting due dates), students in that section will not have access to the quiz or assignment.
6.6 Can I set the same assignment or quiz dates for several sections?
Yes. By default, when you set dates for an assignment or quiz, they apply to Everyone.
However, it is possible to customize further.
Say you have 3 sections in your course, all of which are taking Quiz 1.
Sections 1 and 3 should take the quiz between January 1st and 2nd.
Section 2 should take the quiz between January 5th and 6th.
Rather than creating 3 sets of dates, one for each section, you can create 2.
Under Assign To, select Section 1 & Section 3. Set the dates for sections 1 & 3.
Click + Assign To, select Section 3, and enter the appropriate dates.
6.7 If I set up sections mid semester, will my students suddenly be blocked from assessments?
No. Simply creating sections does not change who can access existing quizzes or assignments. By default, all assessments remain assigned to “Everyone.” Students will only lose access if you edit an individual assessment and explicitly restrict it to certain sections, thereby leaving their section unassigned.
