FAQ
1. Introduction
If you’re using an unintegrated Blended Teaching textbook and need to move grades into Canvas, you’ve likely run into these challenges:
Time-consuming
Manually copying grades for each student and assessment takes time and increases the risk of errors.
Hard to match students
Students may use different names or email addresses in Blended Teaching and Canvas, making manual matching frustrating.
To solve this, we created the Grade Sync Wizard. It allows you to:
Match students and assessments between Blended Teaching and Canvas
Export grades from Blended Teaching
Import them directly into Canvas
Keep everything aligned with minimal effort
2. Meet the Wizard
The Grade Sync Wizard matches:
Students in Blended Teaching with students in Canvas
Assessments in Blended Teaching with assignments in Canvas
This matching is stored in the Blended Teaching gradebook, allowing future exports to be immediately compatible with Canvas.
How it works
In Canvas, every student and assessment has a unique identifier. These identifiers are included when you export the Canvas gradebook.
When you upload the Canvas gradebook into Blended Teaching:
Students are automatically matched if their email addresses match
Assessments are matched if their names are the same
Any mismatches are flagged for your review
Once matched, Blended Teaching remembers these identifiers. When you later export grades from Blended Teaching, the file is formatted so Canvas can recognize and apply the grades instantly.
3. Using the Wizard
3.1. Export Your Gradebook from Canvas

5. FAQ
5.1. Will this overwrite grades for assessments not managed by Blended Teaching?
No. Assessments that are not managed by Blended Teaching will not be affected.
5.2. What happens if I manually change a Blended Teaching grade in Canvas?
Those changes will be overwritten during the next import.
All grade overrides for Blended Teaching assessments should be made in Blended Teaching, not Canvas.
5.3. What if new students enroll after I’ve completed the Wizard?
Each time you run the Wizard, you must upload the latest Canvas gradebook. This ensures:
New students are included
Student mappings remain accurate
5.4. The Wizard is not available for my integrated textbook.
The Wizard is only available for unintegrated textbooks which are being used with Canvas.
5.5. Do I need to re-run the Wizard every time I sync grades?
Yes. Each time you want to sync updated grades from your unintegrated textbook into Canvas, you should run the Grade Sync Wizard again.
However, you do not need to re-match students and assessments unless something has changed. Once the Wizard matches students and assessments, those mappings are saved and reused for future exports.
You only need to upload the latest Canvas gradebook and complete the export/import steps to push updated grades.
5.6. When should I run the Wizard?
You should run the Grade Sync Wizard any time you want to push updated grades from Blended Teaching into Canvas.
Typically, instructors run the Wizard:
After grading new assessments in Blended Teaching
Before midterms or finals
At the end of the term
Any time grades in Canvas need to be refreshed
You do not need to re-run the Wizard just to view grades. Only run it when you want to export grades from Blended Teaching and import them into Canvas.
Once students and assessments are matched, those mappings are saved and reused for future grade syncs.
