How to Update Exams After Reordering or Changing Course Modules

If you have changed the order, added or removed content in your course, and want to update your quizzes and exams to reflect this, here's how.

Updated over 2 months ago

If you reorder modules, add chapters, or remove content after quizzes or exams have already been built, you may need to update those assessments so they reflect the correct material. This guide explains how to update exams using Question Banks and Pools—without rebuilding exams from scratch.

When should I use this guide?

Use this guide if you have:

  • Reordered course modules after exams were already created

  • Added or removed chapters from your course

  • Need exams to reflect updated content coverage

  • Want to avoid rebuilding quizzes or exams entirely

1. Example Scenario

Consider the following example:

  • Your course has 6 modules and 2 exams

  • Exam 1 covers Modules 1–4

  • Exam 2 covers Modules 5–6

You decide to move Module 4 (Time Value of Money) so it appears after Exam 1 instead of before it. As a result:

  • Questions from Module 4 should be removed from Exam 1

  • Questions from Module 4 should be added to Exam 2

Module 4 contains two chapters:

  • Time Value of Money

  • DCF & Annuities

Great. Now we've laid out the scenario, let's go fix the Exams.

2. Removing Questions from an Exam

Let's start by removing the questions relating to Module 4 from Exam 1.

2.1. How Pools Work

When Blended Teaching provides pre-built exams, they are constructed using Pools.

In short:
Each Pool draws a fixed number of random questions from a chapter-specific Question Bank. This ensures every student receives a different but equivalent version of the exam.

2.2. Removing Pools tied to a Module

To remove questions related to a module, remove the Pools associated with that module’s chapters.

Steps:

  1. Go to the Quizzes page in your Control Center

  2. Find the exam you want to edit

  3. Click the three dotsBuild

  4. Update the Instructions section if needed

  5. Scroll to the list of Pools

  6. Identify Pools named after the chapters you are removing

  7. Note the Pool names (you may reuse them later)

  8. Click the three dots next to each Pool → Remove

2.3. Rebalancing Remaining Pools

Removing Pools reduces the total number of questions in the exam. You’ll typically want to rebalance the remaining Pools.

Important:
Rebalancing Pools only affects future exam attempts. Students who already completed the exam are not impacted.

Steps:

  1. Decide how many total questions the exam should contain

  2. Divide that total by the number of remaining Pools

Example:

  • Desired total questions: 40

  • Remaining Pools: 4

  • Questions per Pool: 10

For each Pool:

  • Click three dotsEdit

  • Update Questions to Select

  • Click Update Pool

3. Adding Questions to Exams

After removing questions from one exam, you can add those same questions to another exam.

3.1. Adding Questions Using Pools

Pools are the recommended way to add questions to an exam.

A Pool:

  • Pulls a random set of questions from a chapter-specific Question Bank

  • Ensures equivalent (but not identical) exams across students

To add Pools to an Exam:

  1. Open the Build page for the target exam

  2. Optionally update the Instructions section

  3. Scroll down and select Add Questions from Question Bank

  4. Choose Blended Banks

  5. Search for the relevant Question Bank

  6. Select Pools

  7. Either:

    • Reuse a Pool removed from another exam, or

    • Create a new Pool using + New Pool

  8. Click + to add the Pool to the exam

3.2. Rebalancing the Pools

Adding Pools may increase the total number of questions beyond your target.

This is safe:
Adjusting Pool sizes only affects future exam attempts.

Steps:

  1. Decide the desired total number of questions

  2. Divide by the number of Pools

Example:

  • Desired total questions: 40

  • Current total after adding Pools: 50

  • Reduce questions per Pool accordingly

Edit each Pool:

  1. Click three dotsEdit

  2. Adjust Questions to Select

  3. Click Update Pool

Once complete, the exam will include the correct content and total number of questions.

4. Quick Checklist

Before publishing:

  • ☐ Removed outdated Pools from the original exam

  • ☐ Rebalanced remaining Pools

  • ☐ Added Pools to the new exam

  • ☐ Rebalanced total question count

  • ☐ Updated exam instructions
