How to Add Content from Blended Teaching into Canvas for Unintegrated Classes

A step-by-step guide on how to add chapters from Blended Teaching into Canvas for integrated classes.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

In this guide, we're going to show you how to add content from Blended Teaching for unintegrated classes, split into the following steps:

  1. Introduction to Unintegrated Linking

  2. Three Types of Content

  3. Preparing Blended Teaching

  4. Creating The Links in Canvas

This guide is for classes that are not integrated with Blended Teaching. If your class is integrated with Blended Teaching , check out our guide for adding content to integrated classes here.

1. Introduction to Unintegrated Linking

For an integrated class, when you add in a Blended Teaching Chapter to your Canvas course, the content appears directly inside Canvas.

For an unintegrated class, the setup superficially looks the same as an integrated class in the Canvas, but when students click on a Chapter, a link will open a new window in their browser where they will see the content on Blended Teaching.

Each student has their own account with Blended Teaching, and their performance is tracked. You are able to access their performance through your Blended Teaching Control Center.

2. Three Types of Content

There are 3 types of content that Blended Teaching provides that you can link into Canvas:

  • Content Chapters

  • Quizzes

  • Assignments

2.1. Content Chapters

Content Chapters are added into Canvas as page links. Students click on the links in Canvas and watch the Blended Teaching content on the Blended Teaching platform, which opens in a separate browser window.

2.2. Quizzes

Quizzes are created as Quizzes in Canvas, and a link is added to take students to Blended Teaching to carry out the quiz. Once the quiz is completed, you will need to manually copy over the grades from the Blended Teaching Gradebook into the Canvas gradebook.

2.3. Assignments

These are created as Assignments in Canvas, and linked across to the Blended Teaching platform. Similarly to quizzes, once students have completed the assignment, you will need to manually copy over the grades from your Blended Teaching Gradebook to the Canvas gradebook.

3. Preparing Blended Teaching

Before installing any of the content into your Canvas course, we first need to prepare the content in your Blended Teaching textbook with the following steps:

  1. Course Structure

  2. Publish all Content

3.1. Course Structure

Start by making sure all content is added to your Course Structure tab in the Control Center. If it's not in the Course Structure tab, students won't be able to access it under any circumstance.

3.2. Publish All Content

Once you've included all relevant content in the Course Structure tab, including content chapters, quizzes and assignments, be sure that it is all published - that means the tick icon to the right of the chapter name is highlighted green, and not grey.

If all of your content is in the Course Structure tab, and is published, you're ready for the next step.

4. Creating The Links in Canvas

Now that you are all set in Blended Teaching, it's time to create the links in Canvas.

4.1. Create the Outline Structure

4.2. Add in Content Chapters

4.3 Add in Quizzes

4.4 Add in Assignments

4.5 Add in Introduction Pages
