Student Progress Tracking Explained

Everything you wanted to know about student progress tracking, in one handy place.

Updated over 3 weeks ago

This article describes the student experience of progress tracking, how it works, and what to do if a student has an issue with it that they raise with you.

1. The Student Progress Tracking Experience

We track student progress through videos (only, not including text reading or time spent in assignments and quizzes). This is tracked to the milisecond. As an educator, you can also see this data in your Control Center, in the Student Progress tab.

Students can see their course progress by clicking "My Progress" button in their Blended Teaching player.

Here they can see how much video time they have viewed, how many videos they have completed, alongside some other useful stats.

2. How It Works

The system uses cookies to recognize and monitor students as they watch videos to the millisecond.

Time Watched: Time in the real world and time in the video world are surprisingly different concepts. This is because you can speed up video time, but not real time. The Time Watched stat reported measures the duration of video content watched, adjusted for playback speed and including rewatches. For example, watching 30 seconds of video at 2x speed counts as 60 seconds, and rewatching sections adds to the total time.

Videos Completed: A video is counted as completed when we determine that they have watched 80% of it. That doesn't mean a viewer can fast forward through the video to the 80% mark and it will be done. We have a complex algorithm that determines when it believes they have completed 80% of the video. We can't divulge any more than that, let's just say, they've got to legitimately watch the video in order for it to count.

3. Common Student Issues

Students love to see how much they have progressed. But sometimes, the data doesn't match their expectations. Here's why.

3a. 60 second Delay: First thing to note is that there is a short delay between a student's actions, and the results showing up in Learning Progress tab. So if they're wondering why it's not showing the hard work they've just done, give it some time. 99% of student issues are that they haven't waited long enough to see the data update.

3b. Tracking is Blocked: Students sometimes (rarely) will use special privacy software that blocks our tracking. In these cases, we struggle to get an accurate picture of what they are doing. These could be special VPNs, Ad Blockers, etc. In these cases, our data won't reflect exactly what they've done. We inform them not ot use these, but some students aren't even aware they're switched on.

3c. There are more videos in the tracker than are available for the student: The progress tracker bases the progress of the student on the number of videos published in Blended Teaching. If there are chapters published in Blended Teaching that you do not intend to assign in Canvas or Blackboard, the tracker will include that additional content, but the students will never be able to study it. This means, the Progress Tracker misreports the progress of students.

4. Resolving Common Student Issues

4a. Resolving Tracking Issues with Students

If a student has an issue with time tracking, we ask them to reach out to us through Blended Bot. Most times when they come to us, we can give them instructions on how to resolve it easily. We also have the ability to make adjustments to the historic time and completions for them, so we can make the necessary adjustments to make sure they get the grade deserved.

Sometimes, students may want to discuss this with you, especially if there is a grade involved. In those cases, we always recommend to send them through to us. We can then fix the tracking with them, and make any historic adjustments required.

4b. Resolving Too Much Content in the Progress Tracker

If there is more published content on Blended Teaching than you intend to assign to students, the progress tracker will be misleading for students. There is an easy fix.

  1. Go into your Control Center, and into the Course Structure tab.

  2. Identify the Chapters or Modules that you don't intend to assign to students.

  3. If they are published, unpublish them.

  4. This Progress Tracker for all the students will then automatically adjust.

  5. It can sometimes take up to 10 minutes for this change to be visible in the students' progress trackers.
