Honorlock is a popular tool used to proctor online exams and quizzes. Using it with quizzes can be a complex process with some common issues that can cause frustration. These intructions will help students avoid most issues. π
1. Installing Honorlock
Before you can take a quiz proctored by Honorlock, you must first install it on your browswer. Honorlock only works with the Chrome browser, so if you don't have that, you've got to start by downloading and installing it.
Once you have chrome set up and you are using it, go to your Canvas menu bar on the left hand side of the screen and locate the "Honorlock" menu option. When you click on this, it will evaluate your system and take you through steps to install Honorlock as an extension in your browser.
Go ahead and follow those steps. Once completed, you will have Honorlock installed on your browser, ready for you to take a proctored quiz.
2. Launching A Proctored Quiz
Launching a Proctored quiz requires going through the Honorlock page in Canvas.
To launch a quiz proctored by Honorlock:
Click on the Honorlock menu option in the menu bar on the left hand side of Canvas. This will take you to the Honorlock page in Canvas.
In the Honorlock page there will be a list of quizzes proctored by Honorlock. Find the one you want, and click the blue "launch button".
Follow the steps to authenticate yourself and launch the quiz.
At one point, you will be presented with a request to enter a password. Honorlock will do that for you (see the instructions below called "Using Honorlock to Fill the Password")
3. Honorlock Password Issues
Instead of going to the "Honorlock" page to launch a quiz, students often go directly to the quiz in Canvas, either through the Assignments or Home pages. This is how you would normally launch a quiz without Honorlock proctoring.
If you do this, Honorlock will not be active, and you be blocked from taking the quiz. When you get to the screen that asks you to fill in the password, Honorlock will not fill it in for you and you will be stuck without a password, preventing you from progressing.
If you find yourself in this situation, exit the quiz, and go to the Honorlock page in Canvas, and launch the quiz through there instead.
4. Using Honorlock to Fill the Password
When using Honorlock with Blended Teaching, at some point in the journey, you will see a page that asks you to input a password. But you don't have the password!?
No need to worry - if you have access the quiz through the Honorlock tab in Canvas, Honorlock will provide you with the password. Just follow these steps:
Click into the password input the box that says "Enter quiz password"
After a few seconds of waiting, a pop up will appear in the bottom left of the screen with the title "Find Your Assessment.
Click the button at the bottom of the pop-up that says "I have found my assessment"
Then the pop up button will change to say "Unlock assessment". Click on this when you see it.
After a few seconds of thinking, it will automatically fill in the password for you, allowing you to start your assessment.

5. FAQ
Where Is My Password?
Honorlock provides your password for you. Only Honorlock has your password. If you launch your quiz through the Honorlock page and you successfully verify yourself, Honorlock will automatically fill in the password when it is requested. Detailed instructions are included above in this article about this.
Don't forget that you will need to download the Honorlock Chrome extension first. The instructions on how to do this are listed above.
It doesn't automatically fill my password.
If Honorlock does not pop up and help fill in the password, it's because you launched the quiz directly in Canvas through the Assignment or Home pages, rather than going through the Honorlock page.
The solution is to close the quiz, and launch it through the Honorlock page in Canvas instead.
Don't forget that you will need to download the Honorlock Chrome extension first, if you haven't done so already. The instructions on how to do this are listed above.
β
Honorlock says "Unable to access assessment... We couldn't find a password field on this page. Make sure you are on the correct page."
Sometimes Honorlock gets confused or hung up and tells you that it is "Unable to access assessment. We couldn't find a password field on this page. Make sure you are on the correct page."
If you see this:
Close all browsers on your computer
Re-open chrome
Go to your university system and the Honorlock tab, and open the quiz / exam again
This should fix it. If not, restart your computer. It sounds extreme, but it works.
