Canvas is a powerful tool, there are lots of ways you can add content. In this guide, we're going to focus on the most common (and easiest method) for adding content from Blended Teaching.
Note: If at any point you're struggling, just reach out to us through the bot or email us at help@blended-teaching and we can usually hop on a zoom with you within a few minutes.
Most of the universities we work with are fully integrated with Blended Teaching, meaning that all Blended Teaching content appears inside Canvas, students never link out to an external platform.
Students love this. If you're not already fully integrated with Blended Teaching, or you're not sure, just ask us through the Bot and we can tell you.
1. Check for the BT App in Canvas
To add content you first need to ensure that the Blended Teaching App is available in your LMS. To do this, click on "settings" and go to the tab called "Apps". Then click on "View App Configurations". The page will show you a list of installed Apps in alphabetical order. Blended Teaching should be in that list.
If Blended Teaching is not in this list, we'll need to install Blended Teaching as an App. Click here for separate instructions on how to do that.
If you see the App, carry on to step 2.
2. Add Content from Blended Teaching
All types of content (video, assignments, quizzes, etc.) is added from Blended Teaching into Canvas in the same way. We'll give you those instructions now, and then drill down into the different content types after.
2a. Start by creating the module structure in Canvas
In Canvas, content is contained in Modules. So the best place to start is by creating the module structure you want on the Home screen. Then we will add the content into those modules.
You may be starting from a previous version of the class that already has the module structure laid out. If so, that's a bit of time saved :)
2b. Add In Content from an External Tool
To add content, follow these steps:
In the "Home" screen, go to the relevant module you would like to add the content to.
Click the "+" button in the grey bar at the top of the module.
This will open a box asking you to "Add Item...".
There is a dropdown menu near the top that says "Add" and then a dropdown menu that probably has pre-selected "Assignment". Cilck on this to open the dropdown menu and select "External Tool".
It will give you a list of tools you can open. Select Blended Teaching from the list of potential apps.
2c. Linking Your Blended Teaching Textbook to your Canvas Course
If this is your first time in this course linking content in from Blended Teaching, the system will ask you to confirm which Blended Teaching textbook you want to link to this Canvas class. Select the relevant one, and continue on.
Note, this step is irreversible. It bonds your Blended Teaching textbook to this Canvas Course. Like swans, they stay together forever. So just make sure you choose the right swan. I mean, textbook.
3. Choose the Content you want, and add
Now you're in to your Blended Teaching textbook, and can select chapters that you want to add. You can add them one at a time, or multiple at a time. It's up to you.
To select and add content:
Select the Chapters you want to add by clicking on the tick boxes on the left hand side.
Click the "Add Chapters" button, and it will drop them into your Canvas.
4. Move the content around, change any settings you want, and publish
Now that the content is in Canvas, you can test it out, move it around to the location you want, add any settings that are helpful, and if you're ready, publish it.
